Fort Fisher State Historic Site

History Kristen Dunn November 20, 2024

Let’s chat about something that hits close to home for those of us around Wilmington or for anyone visiting the area. If you haven’t been to the new Fort Fisher State Historic Site yet, you're truly missing out on a beautiful site that's rich with history and new experiences.

Recently, Fort Fisher has upped its game with a brand-new visitor center that's been years in the making. This impressive 20,000-square-foot space, three times larger than the old museum, opened with the intention of showcasing a complete history of Fort Fisher. Jimmy and I checked it out over the weekend and let me tell you, it is pretty cool.

The "Through Their Eyes" exhibit spans centuries, highlighting stories from pre-colonial times to Fort Fisher's involvement in World War II. I love how it brings history alive through the perspectives of men, women, and children from all walks of life.

With its expanded amenities, the new visitor center is a fantastic spot for both tourists and locals to explore. There's a theater, gift shop, and space for events like weddings and classrooms. The walking trails and reconstructed earthworks give visitors a sense of Fort Fisher’s importance during the Civil War.

Until the closing months of the Civil War, Fort Fisher played a crucial role in keeping Wilmington's port open, ensuring supplies reached Confederate forces. Its eventual fall in January 1865 was monumental in sealing the Confederacy's fate.

They have a festival for the Anniversary of the Battle of Fort Fisher every January. My father-in-law is a Civil War reenactor. My husband, Matt, got to shoot a cannon with his dad’s cannon group. How cool is that? When my kids were little, they said the trees looked like broccoli by the ocean. It’s one of my favorite places on the island.

If you're planning a visit, they are open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free! It’s closed on Sundays, Mondays, and most major holidays.

Living on the island, close to historic sites like Fort Fisher, really adds a layer of depth to our daily lives. It’s not just about sun and sand, though those are pretty great too! If you're interested in learning more about the community or real estate opportunities here, feel free to call or text me at 910-297-0752. Or shoot me an email at [email protected]. I love connecting with folks who appreciate the history and beauty of our area as much as I do.

Hope this gives you a little nudge to check out Fort Fisher. Whether you're a history buff or just someone looking for a cool day trip, it’s worth the visit.
