Safely Dispose of Hazardous Waste with New Hanover County's HazWagon

Are you a resident of New Hanover County looking for a convenient and responsible way to dispose of household hazardous waste? Look no further than the HazWagon! New Hanover County offers a mobile household hazardous waste unit, named the HazWagon, stationed at various locations throughout the county for your convenience.

The HazWagon provides a valuable service to residents. It is designed to accept toxic materials and electronics from residents free of charge, providing a safe and environmentally friendly solution for disposing of these potentially harmful items. Additionally, residents can also bring unpackaged food waste to contribute to the county's composting program, further promoting sustainability and reducing landfill waste.

By providing a convenient drop-off point for these items, the HazWagon helps prevent them from ending up in landfills or being improperly disposed of, where they can pose risks to human health and the environment.

Here's everything you need to know about the HazWagon:

Locations and Schedule

The HazWagon is stationed at these primary locations:

  1. Ogden Park: Every Wednesday, from 10am to 2pm near the ball fields.
  2. Wrightsville Beach: Every Thursday, from 10am to 2pm at the Municipal Complex.
  3. Carolina Beach: Every Friday, from 10am to 2pm near the ball fields & skate park on Sumter Ave.
  4. Kure Beach: First Saturday of each month, from 10am to 2pm at the Kure Beach Town Hall.

 

Accepted Items

The HazWagon accepts a wide range of household hazardous waste and electronics, including but not limited to:

  • Acids (bowl cleaners, driveway cleaners, etc.)
  • Aerosols
  • Antifreeze
  • Ballasts
  • Batteries - including alkaline, zinc-carbon, zinc-air, lithium, sealed lead-acid, and any type of rechargeable battery (NiMH, Ni-Cad, Li-Ion, etc.). They do not accept lithium batteries from electric vehicles.
  • Caustics (drain cleaners, lye, borax)
  • CDs, DVDs, and VHS tapes
  • Cell phones (including chargers, batteries, and earbuds)
  • Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL), Tubes, and Bulbs from residential properties only (Maximum 8′ length on CFL tubes)
  • Cooking Oil
  • Electronics
  • Holiday lights - just the lights, not the trees!
  • Fertilizers - solid or liquid
  • Flares, road (No projectile/launched flares such as marine flares)
  • Food Waste
  • Fuels
  • Gel Fuels
  • Helium Tanks (small disposable types only)
  • Herbicides / Fungicides (weed killer, ground clear)
  • Household Cleaners (bleach, ammonia, tile/grout cleaners, glass cleaner, disinfectants, all-purpose cleaners, etc.)
  • Mercury Thermostats and Thermometers
  • Motor Oil and Oil Filters (no 55-gallon drums accepted)
  • Paint
  • Pesticides - solid or liquid
  • Propane Tanks (20 pounds only)
  • Sharps (needles)
  • Smoke Detectors
  • Solvents (degreasers, parts cleaners, paint thinners)
  • Stains, varnishes, and sealers

Items Not Accepted

  • Asbestos-containing materials
  • Explosives & Ammunition
  • Prescription Medications
  • Small Propane Tanks (camp stove size)
  • Regulated Medical Waste
